Dear President Mubarack,

There are many speculations going around the subject of continuity of the presidency after your era is over. Those speculations range from the very short sighted to the extreme doomsday scenarios, passing through the unfeasible, the unrealistic and the plain idiotic.

You do agree with me that uncertainty is not beneficial to the 80 million human beings for whom you have been in charge of their lives for the last 29 years. You owe it to them, to your supporters, to your family and to the world that you declare your final decision about what you intend to do to secure a proper future for Egypt. The status quo is certainly not helping and cannot go on forever. Whether you like it or not, no one expects you to survive beyond 2010 for reasons related to your health condition. You have been through much more than many humans on this earth and thus must have the courage to face realities. You need to act now so that your declared wish that Egypt lives in security and stability can be realized.

I am certain that by now you are working on finalising a succession plan just as I was certain that such plan did not exist when your were transferred to Germany for your operation because every member of your family - and those who were not ordered by you to the contrary - left Egypt in a hurry with most of their possessions and family members since they did not have a functional plan they could trust with their lives and the lives of their loved ones. It was a very precarious period for Egypt during which anything could have happened. You can only thank God that nothing did happen during your absence because your opponents did not have any contingency plans either. They do have several plans now and I am afraid none is friendly to your or your family’s interests.

I can see now one and only solution that will spare everyone lots of misery.

You will declare in person while standing in front of the Parliament that you have decided for the best benefit of Egypt:

1- That your one and only candidate for an immediate referendum for the post of President in the year 2010, is Mr. Mohammed El-Baradei.

2- You will dissolve the Parliament and the Shura Council on the same day.

3- You will make sure that the military will not oppose El-Baradei, by paying beforehand the top brass some substantial amount of money and immediately after give El-Baradei the complete control of the funds from which the salaries of the military are paid.

4- You will put the Security Forces under the command of El-Baradei on the same day by giving him the only key to the funds reserved for paying the salaries of their members.

5- You will step down in the same speech with immediate effect and present El-Baradei by yourself at the same podium at the same time as the man in charge of Egypt as of that day until the referendum is made.

This is the only way by which you will avoid any bloodshed among Egyptians. You and your family will have the only possibility for surviving decently after a succession. Any other succession by your son, by Seliman, by the Muslim Brotherhood or by any other organisation will certainly result into the complete elimination of every member of your family (including Gamal even if he became President), your party officials and your government ministers and the Egyptian people will remain in its miserable status for decades to come or in a constant state of civil war between rich, poor, political parties, religious bodies, police and military.

You can turn my proposal in any way you like and it will always come out standing straight as the only viable and feasible solution.

Your will then be regarded by the whole world as the greatest leader in history forever. You will be revered during the rest of your life as the true saviour of Egypt and enjoy the utmost welcome all over the world. Your tomb will be a true shrine for every Egyptian and you will be the beacon for all Arabs.

My plan might be considered extreme, stupid, unworkable and plain crazy and I am certainly not an Einstein, a visionary nor someone who sees prophecies but I just used simple logic, rationale and a clear head to reach my conclusion.

I wish you Mr. President a healthy, worthy and decent outcome.

Cherif El-Ayouty
