Nationwide Ukip has secured 3.8 million votes but just one MP so far while in Scotland the SNP grabbed 56 seats with 1.5 million votes.

Nigel Farage today quit as Ukip leading after failing in his bid to become an MP.

In an extraordinary show of support the party became Britain's third party as it secured as many votes as both the SNP and Liberal Democrats combined yet is likely to be left with just one MP.

But Mr Farage was beaten by the Tories in his target seat of South Thanet, leaving the party without the charismatic figurehead who propelled his self-styled 'people's army' into the heart of the political establishment.
